Bartees Strange
Indie Rock
Washington DC via Mustang, Oklahoma
The story of Bartees is a truly interesting one. Born overseas with a military father, Strange grew up in middle America Oklahoma. He found his niche as a kid in the Christian hardcore / skate scene, being raised on the likes of Teddy Pendergrass to suddenly finding influence in post-hardcore/screamo acts like Norma Jean. After college, Strange made his way to DC where he worked alongside Obama and numerous NPOs before relocating to NYC. One thing led to another, and Strange found himself back in music with a career rebirth and dropped his debut album Live Forever in 2020 to widespread critical acclaim.
2022 saw Strange take an even larger step in his career, singing with British indie juggernaut 4AD in Q1 ‘22, and then dropping his follow up album Farm to Table in mid-June. The album is an exploratory trip of genre-bending, mixing everything from indie rock to emo to rap to mild-mannered acoustic/songwriter to electropop. Highlights of the album being “Mulholland Dr”, “Heavy Heart”, “Wretched”, “Black Gold”, and a song written post-George Floyd called “Hold the Line”. Strange has become an indie darling of sorts, snagging opening slots with Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and labelmates Big Thief, and the sky really appears to be limit for this rising sensation. We here at NBT cannot get enough of the album, and we expect his star status to continue to rise into a household name over the next year or two.
